Working with artists is by far one of the most fascinating processes, and can be even more intriguing when you introduce the artist to some new technology that they can use. Krrrl is one such artist with which we’ve had the privilege and pleasure to work. Traditionally working in the medium of drawings, Krrrl has recently begun to explore the possibilities of Digital 3D Design.

After rendering one of his drawings in clay relief, the relief was then 3D Scanned. We scaled the 3D model up to 4-ft tall and began the process for the piece to be cast in concrete by the folks over at Counter Intelligence in Albuquerque. Capturing the detail of a pencil stroke or the nuance of the gestural working of the clay through digital technology is truly an amazing thing to see as it comes out in the final product!

As an example of process, and as an homage to Frank Kozik and the folks over at Kidrobot, we took Kozik’s Big Bob Slug art toy and made an XPS Foam Enlargement.

Here is a brief description of the process, and keep in mind, this can be done with nearly anything imaginable:

1.) Take an awesome toy and 3D Scan

2.) Clean up the Scan and digitally scale

3.) Slice 3D model and prep for ShopBot

4.) Mill 3D model

5.) Assemble pieces and voila!

This Halloween costume-head for the character Carol, from Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s story Where the Wild Things Are, needed to be big! But at the same time, wearable…. In order to fabricate the head of Carol, we turned to slabs of EPS (expanded polystyrene) and our 4′ x 8′ ShopBot! Starting with a series of reference images, Jacob Dorler digitally modeled a mesh version that was then reworked into a shell that could fit over the client’s head and rest on their shoulders.

The model was then sliced into sections and machined on both sides of the slab in order to capture any large undercuts, such as the empty cavity where the client’s head would fit. After the pieces were machined, they were aligned and laminated using 3M’s Spray 78 adhesive, designed specifically for foam.

Once together, the form was hand-finished to remove any textures or supports from the machining process! It was a very happy Halloween indeed!
